The 18-year-old actress plays Alex Dunphy in the US show Modern Family and like most child stars, is subject to the trauma of growing up in Hollywood - where every aspect of her life and body are picked apart by the media and online commenters.

Winter regularly comes under fire for posting what many consider to be 'risque' outfits on social media but the teenager explains that posts the images because she's proud of her curves.

"Everybody is so hyped up on the fact that I post photos where my butt's out. It's a butt. Everyone has a butt," the actress told Entertainment Tonight. "I don't think it's crazy."

She added: "It's like 'Let me live! I'm enjoying my life, you're enjoying your life, you should be posting your butt if you like it too!'"

Winter made headlines when she went public with the reasons behind her decision to undergo breast reduction surgery at 17 (the 32F breasts she developed after a growth spurt at 15 made her feel awkward and "oversexualised") and since then she has been celebrating the body she now feels comfortable in.

The actress regularly posts body positivity encouragement messages online and insists that she wouldn't get into a public spat with someone on social media who criticises her or requests that she puts her" butt away".

Winter explained: "I'm sorry you think I should put my butt away, but just unfollow me."

She revealed that growing up in the spotlight was really damaging to her self-confidence and caused her to struggle with body image issues for years. However, she credits her Modern Family female co-stars for encouraging her to embrace her curves.

"I really had the greatest opportunity to have some wonderful role models, especially Sofia Vergara," Winter said. "Working with a curvy beautiful woman that everybody looked up to and loved the way she looked… that was my inspiration to move forward and accept myself because that's what matters."
